Planning a project? We install code-compliant spray foam in [Naples](https://www.idealinsulationinc.com/services/spray-foam-insulation-naples-fl), [Fort Myers](https://www.idealinsulationinc.com/services/spray-foam-insulation-fort-myers-fl) and [Cape Coral](https://www.idealinsulationinc.com/services/spray-foam-insulation-cape-coral-fl).

## Is Spray Foam Insulation Flammable?

**Spray polyurethane foam is combustible: it can burn.** Choosing an appropriate product, protecting it as required, and following its installation instructions are essential parts of a spray-foam project. A fire-test classification does not make foam fireproof.

## What a Class A Fire Rating Actually Tells You

Check the report for the specific foam product and tested thickness. ASTM E84 measures comparative surface flame spread and smoke development under controlled test conditions. It does not establish that a material is noncombustible or predict every aspect of a real building fire. See [ASTM's explanation of the test's scope](https://store.astm.org/e0084-20.html).

Do not assume all open-cell or closed-cell foams have identical ratings, or use a surface-burning classification as an hourly fire-resistance rating for a wall or ceiling. Compare the complete specified assembly, including its protective covering, rather than ranking insulation types from one test number.

## Thermal Barriers, Ignition Barriers and Coatings

For a Naples or Southwest Florida project, ask which protective covering the applicable code and the product's evaluation report require for the actual space.

- **Thermal barrier:** Separates foam from the building interior; gypsum wallboard is a common option. The required performance is different from a surface flame-spread rating.
- **Ignition barrier:** May be permitted in qualifying attics or crawl spaces with limited access. It is not interchangeable with a thermal barrier. Storage, occupancy and access conditions matter.
- **Tested alternatives:** Some evaluated assemblies permit a particular coating or installation without an additional barrier. The approval must match the product, location and installation conditions.

A coating is not automatically an approved barrier simply because it is called intumescent. Check the tested foam/coating combination and required application thickness. The [Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance's fire-safety guidance](https://www.sprayfoam.org/health-safety/) explains why product evaluation reports matter.

A reference to a 15-minute thermal barrier describes prescribed test performance; it is not a promise of 15 minutes of escape time in every fire. [UL explains thermal-barrier testing](https://www.ul.com/services/thermal-barrier-testing-and-certification).

[Read our Florida Building Code insulation guide](https://www.idealinsulationinc.com/insulation-blog/florida-building-code-insulation-requirements-2026-collier-lee-county-builder-guide) for additional project-planning context. Confirm the proposed assembly with the building official responsible for your permit.

## Recessed Lights and Other Heat Sources

**An IC label alone is not enough to assume a recessed light can be covered with spray foam.** Check the fixture's specific foam-compatibility marking and installation instructions, along with the foam manufacturer's requirements. UL provides a separate evaluation for [recessed luminaires intended for contact with expandable foam](https://www.ul.com/sites/default/files/2024-10/AHL23CS1146123_Recessed_Foam_Luminaires_Infosheet_Final_Digital.pdf). Preserve required clearances and access to electrical connections; do not spray an unidentified fixture.

## Fire Precautions During and After Installation

Keep foam away from ignition sources and incompatible heat-producing equipment. Do not assume it needs a direct flame to become hazardous, or that surrounding wood will always ignite first. Plan hot work such as welding or cutting before insulation installation where possible, and protect foam during later work. Burning foam can produce hazardous smoke and gases; see the [American Chemistry Council's fire-safety guidance](https://www.americanchemistry.com/content/download/5080/file/Fire-Safety-Guidance-Working-with-Polyurethane-Foam-Products-During-New-Construction-Retrofit-and-Repair.pdf).

Application also requires the product's specified pass thickness, cooling intervals, ventilation and protective measures. Ask for written re-entry and re-occupancy instructions for the actual product and job conditions. A generic 24- or 48-hour statement is not a substitute for those instructions. The [American Chemistry Council's contractor FAQ](https://www.spraypolyurethane.org/professional-contractors/frequently-asked-questions/) explains these precautions.

## What to Include in Your Spray-Foam Estimate

For an attic, garage, workshop or new home, give the estimator the plans or available photos and explain how each space will be used. Ask the written scope to identify:

- The foam product, installation location and specified thickness.
- The protective covering or evaluated alternative, including who supplies and installs it.
- How lights, flues and other heat sources will be addressed.
- Installation access, ventilation and when occupants or other trades may return.

Open-cell versus closed-cell is only one decision. Neither label alone establishes the required fire protection. Our [open-cell versus closed-cell comparison guide](https://www.idealinsulationinc.com/insulation-blog/open-cell-vs-closed-cell-spray-foam-the-complete-comparison-guide) covers other assembly considerations.

## Spray Foam Fire Safety FAQ

### Is spray foam insulation a fire hazard?

Spray foam is combustible. Product selection, installation conditions and the required protective assembly all matter. A Class A label does not mean the foam cannot burn.

### What fire rating does spray foam insulation have?

Use the specific product's test and evaluation reports. Surface flame-spread and smoke-development results are different from a fire-resistance rating for a complete building assembly.

### Does spray foam need a fire barrier in Florida?

Protective requirements depend on the applicable code, the space and the evaluated assembly. A qualifying limited-access attic may have different requirements from an occupied room or storage space. Document any proposed exception with the product's evaluation report and building official.

### Is open cell or closed cell more fire resistant?

Cell type or density alone does not establish a fire-safety ranking. Compare the named products, tested thicknesses, protective coverings and approved assemblies.

### Can spray foam insulation catch fire from recessed lighting?

An unsuitable installation around a heat source can be hazardous. Verify the fixture's specific spray-foam compatibility and follow both manufacturers' instructions. Do not treat an IC label alone as permission to spray over the fixture.
