Should You Spray Foam the Underside of Your Roof?

Short answer: in Florida, absolutely yes. Spraying the underside of your roof deck is the single most impactful insulation upgrade you can make to a Southwest Florida home.

What Happens When You Spray Foam the Roof Deck

Instead of insulating the attic floor (which leaves your ductwork in a 155°F oven), spray foam on the underside of the roof deck creates a conditioned attic space. Your attic becomes part of your home's thermal envelope.

Results:

  • Attic temperature drops from 150-160°F to 85-90°F
  • Your ductwork stays cool instead of fighting extreme heat
  • AC runs significantly less — 30-40% energy savings
  • Consistent temperatures upstairs and downstairs
  • Reduced moisture and humidity in the attic

Why This Matters in Florida

In northern states, insulating the attic floor can work fine because the temperature differential is manageable. In Florida, the math is different:

  • Your AC pushes 55°F air through ducts
  • Those ducts sit in a 155°F attic
  • That is a 100°F temperature differential attacking your ductwork
  • Even well-sealed ducts lose significant efficiency in that environment

Spray foaming the roof deck eliminates this problem entirely. Your ducts now run through 85°F space instead of 155°F.

Open Cell vs. Closed Cell for Roof Decks

Open cell is our go-to recommendation for most Naples and SWFL roof decks. It provides excellent R-value, superior air sealing, and costs less than closed cell. Applied at 5-6 inches, it delivers R-19 to R-22.

Closed cell is recommended when you need the moisture barrier — coastal homes, homes with a history of roof leaks, or areas with specific code requirements. Applied at 3-4 inches, it delivers R-19.5 to R-26 plus acts as a vapor retarder.

Will It Damage My Roof?

This is the most common concern. The answer: no, when installed correctly. Spray foam on the roof deck:

  • Does not void most roof warranties (check with your manufacturer)
  • Actually extends roof life by reducing thermal cycling (the daily expansion/contraction that degrades shingles)
  • Adds structural rigidity (closed cell bonds sheathing to trusses)
  • Makes roof leaks easier to spot — water tracks along the foam surface to a visible point rather than spreading through fiberglass

What About Roof Ventilation?

Traditional vented attics rely on soffit and ridge vents to move hot air out. When you spray foam the roof deck, you are converting to an unvented (conditioned) attic. This is fully code-compliant in Florida per IRC Section R806.5 and is actually preferred in our humid climate because it keeps moisture-laden outdoor air out of the attic.

The Bottom Line

If you have ductwork in your attic — which most Florida homes do — spray foaming the roof deck is the highest-ROI insulation investment you can make. Nothing else comes close to the energy savings.
