We get it. Nobody wants to call five contractors just to get a ballpark number. So here's the honest breakdown from a company that's been doing this in Collier and Lee County since 2012.

Yeah, it's a range. That's because every house is different — square footage, accessibility, how thick we need to go, whether we're removing old insulation first. A 1960s ranch in East Naples is a completely different job than a new build in Pelican Bay.
This is where most homeowners get confused, and honestly, where some contractors take advantage. Here's the real deal:
Open cell is the lighter, softer foam. It expands a lot — roughly 100x its liquid volume. It's great for interior walls and attics where you need sound dampening and air sealing but don't need a vapor barrier.
For most Naples attics we spray open cell at the roof deck. Five inches is our minimum — that's what the code calls for, and it gives you an R-30 unvented attic assembly here in Climate Zone 1. It's also significantly cheaper than closed cell.
We use open cell in probably 60-70% of residential attic jobs here. It does the job. You don't always need the premium stuff.
Closed cell is the dense, rigid foam. It's a vapor barrier, it adds structural strength to the assembly it's sprayed into, and it has a higher R-value per inch — around R-6.5.
When do you actually need closed cell? Crawl spaces, exterior walls, anywhere moisture intrusion is a concern, and hurricane hardening. In Southwest Florida, that last one matters.
But here's my honest take — if a contractor is pushing closed cell for your entire attic and you're not in a flood zone, ask why. It might be because the margin is better for them, not because you need it. Metal buildings are the real exception: there we spray open cell at 4 inches on the roof and 3.5 inches in the walls, or 2 inches of closed cell all around.
A few things that affect your final number:
In Climate Zone 1, Florida Building Code sets R-30 as the minimum for a vented attic floor (Section R402.1.2). For an unvented attic we foam the roof deck instead — open cell at 5 inches minimum by code, which is what gets you to R-30. When we blow an attic floor rather than foam the deck, we install to R-38. More thickness = more material = higher cost.
Got a tight attic with HVAC ductwork everywhere? That's harder to spray and takes longer. A wide-open new construction attic? Way easier. Accessibility alone can swing your price 15-20%.
If your existing fiberglass batts are water-damaged, moldy, or full of rodent droppings (yeah, we see that more than you'd think in Florida), we have to remove it first. Insulation removal adds $1.00-$2.50 per square foot to the project. But it's worth it — spraying over contaminated insulation defeats the purpose.
Bigger house, bigger job, bigger number. But per-square-foot cost actually goes DOWN on larger jobs because setup and equipment costs are fixed. A 3,000 sq ft home doesn't cost twice what a 1,500 sq ft home costs.

SW Florida attics run 130-140°F in summer. That heat sits right on top of your ceiling and your ductwork, and your AC fights it all afternoon. Sealing and insulating at the roof deck takes that superheated air out of the equation. What homeowners tell us afterward is that the AC starts cycling off in the afternoon instead of running until sundown, and the back bedrooms stop being the hot rooms.
What we won't do is publish a savings percentage. The honest answer depends on your house — its age, its ductwork, its windows, and how you run the thermostat. Any contractor who guarantees you a specific number off your bill before they've looked at your house is guessing.
Spray foam also doesn't settle or sag the way batts do, so it holds its R-value instead of losing it over the years. That's a real part of the math even though nobody can put a percentage on it up front.
Fair question — why not just go with the cheap stuff?
