Why Punta Gorda Homes Need Better Insulation
(Charlotte County Experts)
Insulation Company Punta Gorda FL — Charlotte County's Insulation Experts
Charlotte County has been through it twice — Charley in 2004 and Ian in 2022. If your home in Punta Gorda survived both, chances are it's also carrying 20-plus years of insulation that's slowly losing its effectiveness. If you're one of the many homeowners who rebuilt or upgraded after either storm, you know how much the right building envelope matters. Either way, we can help.
We're Ideal Insulation Inc. out of Naples, and we've been serving Punta Gorda and the rest of Charlotte County for years. We've got 9 trucks, 20 certified installers, and we've held FPL Preferred Contractor status since 2013. We know the housing stock here — from the old canal homes in Punta Gorda Isles to the newer subdivisions out in Deep Creek — and we know what it takes to get these homes performing the way they should in Southwest Florida's climate.
Why Punta Gorda Homes Need Insulation Attention
There's a specific dynamic at play in Charlotte County that we see all the time. A lot of the housing here falls into one of two categories: older homes built in the 1970s through 1990s (many in Punta Gorda Isles and the Historic District) that have original insulation slowly degrading, or newer homes built after Charley that were put up quickly during the rebuilding boom and didn't always get the most thorough insulation job.
In both cases, what we typically find is an attic that's either under-insulated, missing insulation in key spots, or has insulation that's compressed and contaminated enough that it's barely doing its job. In a climate where your AC runs 10 months out of the year, that's a real hit to your energy bills — and to your comfort inside the house.
The other thing that's unique to Punta Gorda is the canal home situation. Punta Gorda Isles has one of the largest canal systems in Florida, and those waterfront homes have their own set of challenges: elevated humidity, salt air exposure, and often a crawl space or elevated floor system that's completely exposed to the elements underneath.
Charley, Ian, and What They Did to Your Insulation
Hurricane Charley hit Charlotte County directly on August 13, 2004. It was a Category 4 storm and it was relatively small and fast-moving, which meant the wind damage was intense but concentrated. A lot of roof systems failed, and with them went attic insulation that got soaked, scattered, or contaminated with debris and mold.
Ian came through in September 2022 with a different profile — massive storm surge along with extreme winds. Homes along the Peace River and in lower-lying areas of Punta Gorda Isles took on water in ways they never had during Charley. Insulation in crawl spaces, floor systems, and lower wall cavities absorbed that water and, in many cases, never really recovered.
If your home went through either of those storms and you haven't had your insulation evaluated since, it's worth having someone take a look. You might be surprised what's actually up there.
Our Services in Punta Gorda & Charlotte County
We offer a full range of insulation services for residential and light commercial properties throughout Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, Burnt Store, Deep Creek, and surrounding areas.
Spray Foam Insulation
Spray foam comes in two varieties, and we use both depending on what the application calls for. Closed cell spray foam is our go-to for exterior applications, roof decks, and anywhere moisture control is critical. It creates a rigid, dense barrier that air and water vapor can't penetrate. Open cell spray foam is better suited for interior walls, certain attic configurations, and any situation where you want the insulation to breathe slightly while still providing excellent thermal performance.
For canal homes in Punta Gorda Isles, we almost always recommend closed cell spray foam in the roof deck and exterior walls. The combination of high humidity, salt air, and proximity to water makes a vapor-open insulation system a liability over time.
Blown-In Fiberglass Insulation
Blown-in fiberglass is the workhorse of attic insulation upgrades. If your home has an accessible attic with existing insulation that's just thin or degraded, we can add blown-in fiberglass on top of what's there (assuming it's clean and structurally sound) to bring your attic up to the right R-value for Southwest Florida. It's fast, it's thorough — the blown-in material gets into every corner and around every obstacle — and it makes a noticeable difference in how well your home holds temperature.
A lot of Punta Gorda homes from the 1980s and 1990s have R-11 to R-19 in the attic. We're aiming for R-38 to R-49 for optimal performance in this climate. That's a big gap, and filling it pays dividends on your FPL bill every single month.
Batt Insulation
Fiberglass and mineral wool batts are the right solution for certain applications — new construction wall cavities, sound control between floors, and specific attic knee wall situations. We carry both standard fiberglass batts and Rockwool mineral wool batts. The Rockwool is particularly good for fire resistance and sound dampening between living spaces.
Insulation Removal
Old, contaminated insulation doesn't just stop working — it can become an active problem. Mold, rodent nesting, pest debris, and moisture damage all compromise what's up there. Before we install anything new, we do a thorough inspection. If the existing insulation needs to come out, we have the equipment to vacuum it out cleanly, dispose of it properly, and prep the area for fresh installation.
This is especially important in post-storm situations. Don't let anyone blow new insulation over storm-damaged material — it just buries the problem.
Crawl Space Encapsulation
Punta Gorda Isles canal homes and many older Port Charlotte homes have crawl spaces or exposed under-floor areas that are essentially fighting the Florida humidity all year long. Encapsulation involves sealing the ground with a heavy vapor barrier, insulating the foundation walls or floor joists, and in some cases conditioning the space with a small dehumidifier or ventilation system. The result is a dramatically drier, more stable environment under your floor — which means fewer pest intrusions, less floor rot risk, and a more comfortable floor surface year-round.
Neighborhoods We Serve in Charlotte County
We cover all of the major communities in and around Punta Gorda, including:
Punta Gorda Isles and PGI
The canal system in PGI creates a unique microclimate — waterfront homes with specific moisture challenges on all sides. We've done dozens of projects here and we know what these homes need.
Historic District
The older homes in Punta Gorda's Historic District have great character but often have insulation that dates back to their original construction. Upgrading these homes requires some finesse — we work carefully in older structures to add insulation without disrupting finished walls and ceilings where possible.
Burnt Store
The Burnt Store area, including Burnt Store Marina, has a mix of newer homes and condos that benefit from spray foam air sealing and blown-in attic work. It's a growing area and we're actively working out there.
Port Charlotte and Deep Creek
Port Charlotte is one of the largest unincorporated communities in Florida, and Deep Creek is one of its most established neighborhoods. Both areas have large concentrations of 1980s and 1990s homes that are prime candidates for attic insulation upgrades. We serve all of ZIP codes 33950, 33955, 33980, and 33983.
The FPL Connection — Why It Matters in Charlotte County
We've been an FPL Preferred Contractor since 2013. If you're in an FPL service area in Charlotte County, ask us about what's currently available when you call.
More importantly, as an FPL Preferred Contractor, we know what it takes to actually move the needle on your electric bill. We see a lot of insulation jobs where someone just threw down a thin layer of fiberglass and called it good. That's not what we do. We're thorough because we know the difference between a job that looks done and a job that actually performs.

Frequently Asked Questions — Insulation in Punta Gorda FL
My home was built after Charley in 2004. Does the insulation need to be replaced?
Not necessarily replaced, but it definitely needs to be evaluated. Homes built quickly after Charley during the rebuilding boom weren't always insulated as thoroughly as they should have been. We can assess what's there and tell you whether it's adequate for today's efficiency standards.
What's the best insulation for a canal home in Punta Gorda Isles?
Closed cell spray foam in the roof deck and exterior walls, combined with crawl space or under-floor encapsulation if your home is elevated or has an exposed floor system. The combination of salt air and waterfront humidity in PGI makes moisture control the top priority.
How long does a blown-in attic insulation job take?
For most single-family homes, a blown-in attic job takes a day or less. We prep the area, seal any air gaps or bypasses first, then blow in the insulation to the target depth. Most homeowners are back to normal the same day.
Do you do insulation removal after storm damage?
Yes — and we strongly recommend it if you've had storm water intrusion into your attic or walls. We vacuum out the old material, clean and dry the space, and then install fresh insulation. Don't skip the removal step.
Are you licensed to work in Charlotte County?
Yes. We're fully licensed and insured in Florida and we work regularly in Charlotte County alongside Collier and Lee counties. Call 239.455.2002 to schedule.
Do you work on homes in Port Charlotte and Deep Creek, not just Punta Gorda?
Absolutely. We cover all of Charlotte County — Punta Gorda Isles, Burnt Store, Historic District, Port Charlotte, Deep Creek, and everything in between. Same crew, same quality, same standards.

Open Cell vs. Closed Cell:
What's Right for Your Home?
Open Cell Spray Foam
What We Install & Where
Attic Insulation
Your attic is where most energy loss happens. We spray foam the underside of your roof deck, creating a conditioned attic space. This keeps your ductwork cool and drops your home temperature by 5-8 degrees.
Wall Insulation
For existing homes, we can inject foam through small holes. For new construction or renovations, we spray directly onto wall cavities before drywall goes up.
Crawl Space Encapsulation
Florida crawl spaces are moisture nightmares. Closed cell spray foam seals them completely, preventing mold, mildew, and pest problems.
Garage & Workshop Insulation
Turn that hot garage into usable space. Spray foam can make your garage comfortable year-round.
